The Vanishing (1988) dir. George Sluizer

Spoorloos: After his girlfriend is abducted while on vacation in France, a young man obsessively searches for her for three years, fueled by postcards sent to him from the abductor. Uniquely structured and masterfully directed psychological drama.
A philosophical view of morality, told through the multi-layered character of a kidnapper. A clean and direct look into the motivations of evil and wrongdoing. A very different film on the subject, free of artistic manipulation of the audience, sudden frights and scares.
Chilling performance from Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu in a role originally intended for Jean-Louis Trintignant.
Well received by critics in both The Netherlands and abroad. Acclaimed upon release in the USA, leading to a poor remake in 1993.
Cited by Stanley Kubrick as “the most terrifying film he had seen, even more frightening than The Shining”, listed among his favorite films lists.
An adaptation of the novella The Golden Egg by Tim Krabbé.
