The Lost Weekend (1945) dir. Billy Wilder

A recovering alcoholic evades his loved ones and goes on a four-day drinking binge. The definitive film on the subject of alcohol abuse and addiction. Excellent direction as expected from Billy Wilder, coupled with a memorable performance by lead Ray Milland as Don Birnam. An uncompromising account on the effects of alcoholism on the ill and the people around them. Birnam’s life spirals out of control, diluted in rye whisky in his maniacal drinking bout.
Winner of four Oscars from seven nominations – for Best Picture, Actor, Direction and Screenwriting, and shared winner of the Grand Prix prize at Cannes.
Adapted screenplay based on Charles R. Jackson’s 1944 novel of the same name.
