The Ice Storm (1997) dir. Ang Lee

Around Thanksgiving in 1973, two neighboring families, possessed by infidelity and boredom, pass their moral corruption onto their alienated children. A drama film about tragedy bringing families together. Directed by Taiwanese director Ang Lee, based on the novel of the same name by Rick Moody.
Excellent direction and performances, the film raises many existential and ethical questions, dealing with family, alienation, degradation of parenting and the effects on American society at the height the sexual revolution of the 1960’s and 70’s.
Superb cinematography by Frederick Elmes. Winner of the Best Screenplay award at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival. Well received by critics, considered one of the director’s best works.
