Summer With Monika (1953) dir. Ingmar Bergman

Sommaren med Monika: Youths Monika and Harry meet and fall in love, escaping from their troubled families and jobs, and spend a dreamy summer sailing around the Stockholm archipelago. Reality hits hard once they return home.
One of Bergman‘s best works from his “early” period. Controversial (and popular) at the time due to it’s frank depiction of nudity. Bergman and cinematographer Gunnar Fischer make use of lead Harriet Andersson‘s natural beauty in a tasteful and respectful manner. Summer is the first collaboration between her and the director (who were also romantically involved at the time). Andersson‘s performance brought her worldwide acclaim and cemented her as one of the most talented actresses in cinema history.
Superb lighting and masterclass direction. Beautiful, sad and romantic. Based on Per Anders Fogelström’s 1951 novel of the same.
