Incendies (2010) dir. Denis Villeneuve

Per their dying mother’s request, twin brother and sister travel to her native country in the Middle East that is just recovering from a bloody civil war, in order to uncover her secretive past. Partially based on events surrounding the Lebanese Civil War and the story of prisoner Souha Bechara. Adapted from Wajdi Mouawad’s play of the same name.
A very interesting mystery thriller, set against the backdrop of a still-lasting conflict. Raises questions about the horrors of war and the crimes that accompany it, the everlasting memories of terror and the restrictions on freedom in the Middle East – religious and otherwise.
Met with much critical acclaim – a fine film from one of the best directors working today – Quebecois Canadian Denis Villeneuve. Noteworthy acting performances, particularly from Belgian-Moroccan actress Lubna Azabal in the lead role.
