Election (1999) dir. Alexander Payne

A young high school history teacher’s personal and professional life slowly crumble after meddling in the school’s student body elections.
A combination of dark humor and original, stylized and unrestricted editing structure. Set in suburban Omaha, Nebraska, the film follows the different intersecting storylines of it’s characters, from both their own and their peers’ perspectives, in a fresh and novel manner.
Though the film did poorly in the box office, it was met with widespread critical acclaim and still retains it’s cult status. Only the second film of Nebraska-native director Alexander Payne, which helped establish him as a modern-day auteur in American cinema. A satire of American politics and education, as well as suburban life and family affairs. Based on Tom Perrotta’s 1998 novel of the same name.
Great performances all around, notably from lead Matthew Broderick , who established himself in a “high school atmosphere”, though on the other side of the teacher-student barrier, in the 1986 cult comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Reese Witherspoon proves her superb acting versatility as the overachieving and hyper-ambitious Tracy Flick.
