Damnation (1988) dir. Béla Tarr

Kárhozat: In an unnamed small town, a lonely and depressed man falls in love with a married bar singer.
Through a series of long, elegantly composed black and white scenes, we fall into a depressing, yet remarkably enthralling world. A story of loneliness, despair and betrayal. Slow-paced and mesmerizing, a beautiful and bleak marriage of picture and sound.
A true lesson in atmospheric arthouse cinema. Karhozat is the film which started the unmistakable style of Hungarian master Béla Tarr, which we find in his later works. It also started the notable collaboration between him and novelist László Krasznahorkai.
