Apocalypse Now (1979) dir. Francis Ford Coppola

During the Vietnam War, a US Army Captain is sent on a special mission to assasinate a renegade American colonel, who has taken over and controls a native tribe deep inside the jungle close to the Cambodia border. A film not strictly bound by the “war” genre, a film that dares to uncover the most hidden and dark parts of the human soul at a time of crisis. A look into the brutality and futility of war as a whole, framed in a picturesque and mystifying Vietnam setting. A masterpiece of the New Hollywood period.
Absolutely marvelous cinematography. Superb direction and performances throughout. Memorable period soundtrack, including The Doors and the Rolling Stones.
Considered by many as one of the Greatest Films of all time, despite numerous problems during production. Inspired by Joseph Conrad’s novella Heart of Darkness. Nominated for 8 Oscars, of which it won 2. Winner of the Palme D’Or and FIPRESCI Prizes at teh Cannes Film Festival.
