American Beauty (1999) dir. Sam Mendes

A 42 year-old office worker experiences a mid-life crisis, marked by an infatuation with his teenage daughter’s best friend. Depicts a seemingly perfect American suburban family in the upper middle class, an exterior shell which only serves to hide the rottenness of it’s inner character.
World class performances all around, especially by Kevin Spacey in the lead role of the depressed husband Lester Burnham.
A thought-provoking masterpiece. Serves as a social commentary and portrait of the ‘plastic’ facade of contemporary Western life. Ironic, satirical and powerful. A profound view on cliched suburbia and ‘ordinary’ existence.
Debut feature for British director Sam Mendes, winning him 5 Oscars from 7 nominations. A timeless film that is very close to perfection.
A perfect lesson in the use of color in narrative.
