Angst essen Seele auf, lit.”Fear eat soul up”: An elderly German widow and a younger Moroccan gastarbeiter start a romantic relationship, against societal norms and much to the appall of those around them. Considered to be one of Rainer Fassbinder’s finest works, the film contains many themes and elements from the controversial director’s own life.
The use of color and effective direction are able to convey themes that are far beyond the surface, notably about German society after WWII and the hypocrisy in social behavior of people in general.
Highly influential. Fassbinder at first intended this project as a”training exercise” and filmed it in just under two weeks. A pivotal film of the German New Wave – New German Cinema.
